MUMBAI – Benchmark indices closed lower Tuesday as investors likely booked profits from Monday's gains. Most oil and gas companies fell sharply with the Nifty Oil & Gas being the worst-hit among sectoral indices. Three major index heavyweights, Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank, dragged down the Nifty 50.
On Tuesday, the Nifty 50 closed at 24649.55 points, down 73.20 points, or 0.3% and the BSE Sensex was at 80710.25 points, down 308.47 points, or 0.4%. Nifty India Defence, Nifty Auto, Nifty Consumer Durables, and Nifty Metal were the only sectoral indices to end higher, closing up 0.1-1%.
Nifty Oil & Gas was the worst hit and closed 1% lower Tuesday. US President Donald Trump's threat to "substantially" raise tariffs on Indian goods being shipped to the US due to its continued energy procurement from Russia likely weighed on the domestic oil stocks. These levies will be in addition to the 25% tariff and an additional penalty on India that Trump had announced last week, analysts said. Brent crude oil prices continued to fall for the fourth straight session. The August contract traded on the Intercontinental Exchange was down over 1% at $68.02 per barrel.
Traders unwound their long positions Tuesday. The put-call ratio for current week contract is at 0.73 compared to 0.85 on Monday, implying negative sentiments, Vipin Kumar, assistant vice-president and senior derivatives analyst at Globe Capital Market, said.
IndusInd Bank rose nearly 2?ay after the bank appointed Rajiv Anand as its new managing director and chief executive officer. Many brokerages were positive on this appointment for the long term. The stock was the top gainer on the Nifty 50. On the other hand, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone was the worst-hit stock on the index, closing over 2% lower. Most oil and gas stocks traded in the red Tuesday after Trump threatened to raise import tariffs on Indian goods over the country's oil purchases from Russia.
Godfrey Phillips was among the top gainers in the Nifty 500, ending nearly 10% higher, as the company reported robust on-year growth in its net profit and revenue for the June quarter. The stock had risen to its all-time high of INR 9,881.50 but closed off highs at INR 9,874.50.
Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure closed at the 5% lower circuit after media reports said Reliance group Chairman Anil Ambani will appear before the Enforcement Directorate Tuesday with respect to a money laundering case. Triveni Turbines closed nearly 10% lower after its Apr-Jun net profit fell nearly 4% on year after market hours Monday.
Solar Industries India and Vishal Mega Mart were the biggest gainers on the Nifty 200, up around 4?ch. Newgen Software Technologies and Tanla Platforms rose 13% and 12%, respectively, and were the top Nifty 500 gainers. Swiggy ended over 3% lower and was among the biggest losers in the Nifty 200.
Global index provider MSCI is expected to include Vishal Mega Mart Ltd., Swiggy Ltd., Hitachi Energy India Ltd., and Waaree Energies Ltd. to its standard index as part of its August rejig, which is to be announced on Friday, Nuvama Alternative and Quantitative Research said in a report dated Monday. On the other hand, it will remove Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd. and Thermax Ltd. from the standard index.
Laxmi India Finance fell over 15?ter listing at INR 137.52 on the NSE, a discount of 13% to its issue price of INR 158. Aditya Infotech rose over 60?ter listing at INR 1,015 on the NSE, a premium of 50% to its issue price of INR 675.
