NEW DELHI – The Asian Development Bank has approved a $126.42 million loan and $1 million in technical assistance to support rural development in India by promoting sustainable, climate-resilient tourism in Uttarakhand's Tehri Lake region.

The project will follow a multi-sectoral approach aimed at generating jobs, diversifying local incomes, and build climate resilience around the hydropower lake. Key components include institutional capacity building and the development of essential infrastructure such as transport, water supply, waste management systems, and nature-based solutions to reduce risks from landslides and floods. The Tehri Lake area is highly vulnerable to natural hazards such as droughts, wildfires, and flooding, and is currently facing high out-migration rates alongside a sharp rise in tourist inflows.

"The project aims to benefit more than 87,000 residents and 2.7 million visitors annually through improved tourism planning, new visitor facilities, upgraded sanitation, and solid waste management, and disaster preparedness," the release said quoting ADB's Country Director for India Mio Oka.  End
