IMD issues red alert for extremely heavy rain over parts of Kerala till Wed

MUMBAI – An upper air cyclonic circulation currently lies over Rayalaseema, while another is lying over south Kerala and its neighbourhood, the India Meteorological Department said. Another upper air cyclonic circulation is lying over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast. Under the influence of these weather phenomenon, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Kerala till Wednesday, the weather department said, for which it has issued a red alert.  

 

A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

Under the influence of the same weather system, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of north interior Karnataka Tuesday, over coastal and south interior Karnataka till Wednesday, and over Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Most parts of the southern peninsula are likely to witness heavy rainfall till Friday, the bureau said.

 

In northeast India, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from Thursday to Monday, and over Nagaland on Thursday and Friday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is seen over several parts of the region till Monday, the department said. 

 

Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Bihar on Thursday and Friday, and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Monday, the department said. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely over most parts of east India in the next seven days, while the intensity of rainfall is seen declining over parts of central India in the next 6-7 days, it said.

 

In west India, heavy rainfall is expected over Marathwada till Thursday, over Konkan and Goa on Thursday and Friday, and over central Maharashtra on Tuesday and Friday. Light to moderate rainfall is likely over most of the region in the next five to six days, the weather department said.  End
