NEW DELHI – Quoting sources, news television channel CNBC-TV18 reported Tuesday that the Securities and Exchange Board of India was in talks with the finance ministry to explore ways to reduce trade volume of equity options and increase cash volume in the equity segment. SEBI may end all weekly options contracts and permit the introduction of bi-monthly options contracts, the news television channel reported, quoting sources.
To encourage an increase in cash market volume, SEBI may consider reducing margin requirements in the segment, the news report said. It said SEBI may ask the finance ministry to consider lowering the securities transaction tax on cash market transactions. Sources told the TV channel that the government believes weekly expiry contracts in the equity derivatives segment are being used for speculation and not hedging. End
