MUMBAI – An upper cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining south Tamil Nadu is likely to cause extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said, for which it has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
Under the influence of the same weather system, very heavy rainfall is also likely over several parts of Tamil Nadu from Sunday to Wednesday and over Kerala from Sunday to Friday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is expected over most parts of the southern peninsula till Friday, the department said.
Another upper air cyclonic circulation is lying over east Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. The weather system is expected to cause extremely heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Sunday and over north Bihar on Saturday, the weather bureau said, for which it has issued a red alert. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the same regions till Monday, the bureau said.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is seen over several parts of east India in the next seven days, while heavy rainfall is seen over parts of central India till Friday, the bureau said.
The weather department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Meghalaya till Sunday and over Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is expected to continue over most parts of northeast India in the next seven days, the department said.
Light to moderate rainfall is expected over several parts of West India in the next six-seven days, the weather department said. End
