AHMEDABAD/MUMBAI – Tata Power Co. Ltd. hopes to commission around 1,600 megawatts of new renewable energy projects by the end of Mar. 31, the company's management said in its post-earnings analyst call Friday. Tata Power commissioned 652 megawatts of green power in the June quarter. Of this, 560 megawatts was for third parties and 92 megawatts for their own utility scale. The company expects to complete most of the third-party orders in Jul-Sept and thereafter all the projects that will come up will be for their own utility scale, the company management said.

"So, we have a pipeline of 5.4 gigawatts of our own projects in which we are the developers...So, in next two years we want to complete all this and then see if we have capability to take up third party projects," the management said, adding that over the coming two years, it would endeavour to complete 2.0 gigawatts to 2.5 gigawatts of green energy projects every year. The move is part of its broader strategy to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio and meet long-term clean energy targets.

On Friday, Tata Power reported slightly better-than-expected earnings for the June quarter, driven by robust performance in its renewables segment. The electricity generation and electric utility company's consolidated net profit for the quarter rose over 9% on year to INR 10.60 billion, beating the Street's view of INR 10.12 billion. Its consolidated revenue from operations for the quarter grew over 4% on year to INR 180.35 billion, also above the analysts' expectation of INR 178.39 billion.

While the company beat Street expectations for the June quarter earnings, one of the key short-term issues the company highlighted was lower solar generation during the quarter due to excess rainfall and reduced solar radiation. These weather-related factors impacted plant load factors at solar installations during the period, compared to the corresponding quarter last year.

After many years, the company saw a quarter in which power consumption declined nearly 1.3%. "We have not seen for at least the last five, six years. And this was because of the early onset of monsoons, where we saw the monsoon coming around mid of May. And this has continued till now," the company's management said.

On Friday, shares of Tata Power closed at INR 389.30 on the National Stock Exchange, down over 2% from its previous close.  End
