NEW DELHI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s despatches in July grew 3% on year to 180,526 units as compact cars showed signs of life even as utility vehicle wholesale sales contracted yet again, according to the company's exchange filing Friday. Its exports grew 32% on year to 31,745 units while domestic sales fell nearly 2% to 148,781 units.
The country's largest passenger vehicle maker sold 72,662 passenger cars to dealerships in July, up nearly 5% on year. Passenger car sales have grown year-on-year for the first time in six months, mainly driven by a recovery in compact car sales. Maruti Suzuki's mini car sales fell 32% on year to 6,882 units. Maruti Suzuki's mini car portfolio comprises the Alto and the S-Presso models.
Maruti Suzuki sold 65,667 compact cars in July, nearly 12% more than it did in the same month last year. This is the largest number of compact cars the company has sold to dealerships since February, when it despatched 72,942 units. The 12% growth also comes after two straight months of contraction. Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR feature in the company's compact car line-up.
Sales of the sedan Ciaz, which Maruti Suzuki classifies as a mid-size car, plummeted to 173 units in July, compared to 603 units last year. This was also the fewest Ciaz models it has sold since April 2020, when the government had imposed a nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The wholesale sales of utility vehicles fell for the second consecutive quarter in July to 52,773 units, down 6.3% on year. Its utility vehicle portfolio consists of the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6 models.
The company sells only one van model, the Eeco. Wholesale sales of Eeco grew almost 4% on year to 12,341 units in July. Including vans, the domestic passenger vehicle despatches by Maruti Suzuki barely grew on year to 137,776 units.
The Super Carry maker sold 2,794 light commercial vehicles last month, down over 3% on year. Sales to other original equipment manufacturers fell 23% on year to 8,211 units in July. Such sales, in essence, are vehicles rebadged and sold by Toyota India.
Maruti Suzuki reported a net profit of INR 37.1 billion for the June quarter on a revenue of INR 384.1 billion. At 1522 IST, the company's shares were down 2.5% at INR 12,293 on the National Stock Exchange. End
