MUMBAI – Under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation lying over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of the region during the weekend, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather bureau has issued a red alert for this. It has also issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Bihar on Sunday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

Heavy to very heavy rain is likely over most parts of eastern India in the next seven days, with very heavy rainfall seen over parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Saturday to Monday, western Madhya Pradesh Monday and Tuesday, and Bihar during till Sunday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is likely over several parts of central India till Thursday, the department said.


Extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Meghalaya during the weekend, and over Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, the weather department said, for which it issued a red alert. In northeast India, most parts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next seven days.

 

In southern peninsular India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the next six-seven days, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema till Thursday, while the rest of the region is likely to see light to moderate rainfall in the next seven days, the bureau said. 

 

Light to moderate rainfall is expected over several parts of West India in the next six-seven days, the weather department said.  End
