NEW DELHI – The number of Unified Payments Interface transactions jumped to a record high of 19.47 billion in July, up 35% on year, data from the National Payments Corp. of India showed. In value terms, UPI transactions increased 22% on year in July to INR 25.08 trillion.

UPI transactions had hit a record high of 18.68 billion in May but slipped to 18.40 billion in June. UPI transactions in value terms also declined in June to INR 24.04 trillion from INR 25.14 trillion in May. 

The average daily transaction count was 628 million in July, higher than the 613 million daily transactions recorded in June. The average daily transaction amount was INR 809.19 billion last month, against INR 801.31 billion in June, data showed.

Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra in his comments last week have emphasised the sustainability of the UPI depends on someone bearing the transaction costs. Currently, the government is covering these costs but Malhotra suggested that either the users or the stakeholders should collectively bear the costs. His comments come amid speculation of reintroducing merchant discount rates on UPI transactions. Malhotra lauded the government's subsidy to the UPI ecosystem, which has led to a significant increase in digital payments.  End
