Niva Bupa Q1 net loss widens; income up 13% YoY, spend rises 28%

MUMBAI – Niva Bupa Health Insurance Co. Ltd. reported a net loss of INR 914.4 million for the June quarter, sharply higher than the net loss of INR 188.2 million it had posted in the year-ago quarter. The company's total income in the latest quarter was INR 13.08 billion, down 16.4% on quarter but up 12.9% on year. The gross premium written was INR 16.32 billion, down 21.5% on quarter but up 11.5% on year.
The total assets under management of the company at the end of June were at INR 81.12 billion, up 43% on year. The claims ratio increased to 77.9%, up from 64% in the year-ago quarter. The solvency ratio has increased to 2.86 times from 2.39 times. Its total expenses were up 27.9% on year at INR 14.54 billion in the reporting quarter. Expenses were down 1.1% on a sequential basis.
The retail health gross written premium has increased to INR 10.92 billion in the June quarter, up 10.3% on year. The retail health accretion market share has fallen to 10.8%, down 420 bps on year. The number of active lives insured at the end of June rose to 22.5 million, up from 20.8 million at the end of the trailing quarter.
On Thursday, shares of Niva Bupa Health Insurance Co. ended at INR 87.55 on the National Stock Exchange, up 2.8%. The company announced its earnings after market hours. End
