MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of northeast and eastern India during the next seven days. Assam and Meghalaya are likely to record extremely heavy rainfall on Saturday, caused by an upper air cyclonic circulation over the northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal, it said.
Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of northwest India till Tuesday. The weather department issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Rajasthan on Thursday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.
The weather bureau said very heavy rainfall is likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from Saturday to Monday and Bihar on Saturday and Sunday. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of eastern and central India till Aug. 7. However, the weather bureau expects rainfall intensity over eastern Rajasthan and western Madhya Pradesh to decrease from Friday.
The weather department's agricultural meteorology division has issued an advisory to farmers in eastern Rajasthan to make provision to drain out excess water from kharif crop fields. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh have been advised to drain out excess water from fields where urad, moong, soybean, and bajra have already been sown.
The weather bureau said subdued rainfall activity is likely over southern India during the next six-seven days while Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall from Saturday to Wednesday. Strong surface winds with speeds reaching 40-50 km per hour are very likely over southern India during next five days, the bureau said. End
