--US Trump: India, Russia can take their dead economies down together
NEW DELHI – US, India relation seems to have dived another notch as President Donald J. Trump again took to social media saying he does not care "what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care," he said.
On Wednesday Trump announced that the US will impose 25% tariffs on Indian goods shipped to the country, along with an additional penalty, from Friday. The 25% tariff is only slightly lower than the 26% duty that Trump had announced in April, which was eventually suspended till Aug. 1. The rupee is expected to extend losses and slump against the dollar after the US announcement.
"Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country," Trump had said on his social media platform Truth Social.
"We have done very little business with India, their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way," he said Thursday.
On Wedesday, Trump had said India will pay a penalty over the 25% tariff for its procurement of military equipment and energy from Russia. "Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia's largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST," Trump had said. End
