CESC Q1 revenue flat but PAT rises as expenses fall

MUMBAI – CESC Ltd. Wednesday reported a near double-digit on-year growth in its bottom line for the June quarter despite flat revenues. The net profit rose due to a sharp fall in total expenditure, led by a fall in the cost of energy purchased and the cost of fuel. Despite lower expenses, the company missed analysts' estimate of net profit for the June quarter by a wide margin.
CESC reported a net profit of INR 2.11 billion for the latest quarter, up nearly 10% on year but lower than analysts' estimate of INR 3.70 billion. The company reported revenues of INR 28.62 billion for the reporting quarter, almost unchanged from the year-ago quarter.
CESC's total expenditure fell 14% in the June quarter to INR 27.26 billion. The cost of energy purchased, the cost of fuel, and depreciation all fell on year in the June quarter. The cost of energy purchased was INR 12.69 billion, down 20% on year. The cost of fuel in the latest quarter was INR 4.11 billion, down 28% on year. The regulatory income of the company fell to INR 930 million, down 83% from INR 5.61 billion in the year-ago quarter.
Employee costs rose to INR 2.72 billion for the reporting quarter, up 11% from the year-ago quarter. Finance costs rose 8% to INR 2.24 billion. Shares of the company Wednesday ended at INR 176.61, down marginally, after its earnings were declared. End
