MUMBAI – The benchmark indices closed marginally higher after a volatile session Wednesday, buoyed mainly by rise in shares of Larsen & Toubro. Some analysts said the rise of the indices is temporary and that investor sentiment remains weak due to delay in India-US trade deal and disappointing June quarter earnings. Mahindra & Mahindra has advanced its board meeting from Thursday to Wednesday to consider the June quarter earnings. The results will be announced later in the day.

The Nifty 50 ended at 24855.05 points, up 33.95 points or 0.1%. The BSE Sensex closed at 81481.86 points, up 143.91 points or 0.2%. Larsen & Toubro closed nearly 5% higher and was the top Nifty 50 gainer. Brokerages are positive on the stock after the company's strong on-year growth in June quarter earnings and a robust order pipeline outlook. Global brokerage Jefferies said the company's strong order inflow puts it in a comfortable position to meet its guidance. According to Jefferies, higher contribution from its hydrocarbon segment gives L&T the comfort on its margins having some potential to expand further.

NTPC closed 1.2% higher after the company's net profit for the June quarter rose 6% on year and was slightly better than expected. The company's operating margin expanded to 20.22% from 18.65% a quarter ago. On the other hand, Tata Motors closed 3.5% lower and was the worst hit among the Nifty 50 constituents. The stock fell to an over two-month low on media reports that the company would acquire Italian commercial vehicle maker Iveco for $4.5 billion. Power Grid Corp. of India closed 1.1% lower after the company's net profit for Apr-Jun came in at INR 36.53 billion, lower than expectations of INR 37.37 billion.

Broader market indices remained under selling pressure, underperforming the benchmark indices. Small-cap indices fell sharper than their mid-cap peers. The Nifty Smallcap 50 closed 0.7% lower while the Nifty Midcap 150 closed slightly higher. India VIX, the fear gauge of Dalal Street, ended down nearly 3% at 11.2050, extending its fall for the second straight session.

Most sectoral indices also ended lower after a volatile session. Nifty Realty ended down nearly 1% and was the worst-hit among the sectoral indices. The index was weighed down by a 2-3% fall in Brigade Enterprises, DLF, and Godrej Properties. The Nifty Media, Nifty PSU Bank, and Nifty Auto indices ended lower by 0.6-0.8%. Nifty India Infrastructure index closed 0.5% higher and was among the top gainers among the sectoral indices. The Nifty IT index closed 0.3% up.

Among other stocks, Triveni Engineering & Industries closed 6% lower after the company posted a steep decline in consolidated net profit for the June quarter. The stock hit a three-month low of INR 338.35 intraday. International Gemmological Institute (India) ended 2% higher. The stock rose over 8% intraday to an over-five-month high of INR 442 after the company posted a jump in consolidated net profit for the June quarter.

The New India Assurance Co. closed 18% higher after the company delivered a strong performance for the June quarter. The insurer's net profit rose 80% on year and total income rose 12% on year. GE Vernova T&D India hit the 5% upper circuit at INR 2,597 in pre-open trade after which trading in the stock was halted for the session. After market hours on Tuesday, the company said its net profit for the June quarter had doubled on year.

Indiqube Spaces and GNG Electronics made their debut on the exchanges Wednesday. Indiqube Spaces listed at INR 216 on the National Stock Exchange, a discount of around 9% to its issue price of INR 237. The stock closed at INR 218, down 8%. It had fallen 15% to an intraday low of INR 201.60. GNG Electronics listed at INR 355, a premium of nearly 50% to the issue price of INR 237. The stock closed 41% higher at INR 333.39. It had risen to an intraday high of INR 359.40.

Redington fell the most among the Nifty 500 constituents, closing 8% lower. This was despite the company's consolidated net profit and revenue for Apr-Jun rising 12% and 22% from a year ago, respectively. Zen Technologies fell for the fifth straight session, plunging nearly 20%, after weak earnings for the June quarter. Craftsman Automation closed 6.4% higher because of upbeat earnings for the June quarter. The stock hit a 10-month high of INR 7,067 but came off it towards the close of session.
