MUMBAI – A western disturbance over Punjab and adjoining Pakistan is likely to lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall over several parts of northwest India till Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over eastern Rajasthan till Thursday, the department said. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected over most parts of the western Himalayan region and some parts of the northwestern plains in the next seven days, it said.
Under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation, extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of eastern Rajasthan on Wednesday, the weather department said, while issuing a red alert for this.
The weather department's agricultural meteorology division has issued an advisory to farmers in eastern Rajasthan to postpone the sowing of rice in nurseries, as well as of maize, soybean and urad till cessation of heavy rainfall in the region. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh have been advised to postpone the sowing of bajra and vegetables and to drain out excess water from fields where urad, moong, soybean, and bajra have already been sown.
The low pressure over Madhya Pradesh weakened in the late hours of Tuesday, though the associated cyclonic circulation over the region persists, the weather bureau said. An upper air cyclonic circulation also lies over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha, while a trough runs from northwest Madhya Pradesh to northeast Bay of Bengal, the bureau said.
Under the influence of these weather systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over multiple parts of eastern and central India till Tuesday, the weather department said. It has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of western Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday.
In northeast India, very heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh from Friday to Tuesday, and over Assam and Meghalaya from Thursday to Tuesday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of northeast India in the next seven days, the department said.
Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of western and southern India till Tuesday, the weather department said. End
