MUMBAI – The water level in 161 key reservoirs across India rose more than 59% on year to 110.864 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current level is 60.76% of the total live storage capacity of 182.461 billion cubic metres.

 

According to data collated by Informist, the current water level in key reservoirs is at a six-year-high. The water level as of Thursday was 53.33% above the 10-year average for this period.

 

Water levels rose from the previous week's level of 104.364 billion cubic metres on Jul. 17, data showed. While four of the five regions have recorded a rise in water levels from last week, they have fallen in the eastern region.

 

Reservoirs in the eastern region held 10.318 billion cubic metres of water as of Thursday, down from 10.995 billion cubic metres recorded on Jul. 17. As of Thursday, water levels were at 47.50% of their total live storage capacity. This was higher than 29.98% held by the reservoirs in the same period a year ago. The eastern region comprises Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, and West Bengal.

 

Water levels in the eastern region were not replenished due to deficient rainfall across the region in the week ended Jul. 23. Rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya for the week stood at 44.5 millimetres, 65% below normal, while Jharkhand recorded 34% below normal showers at 50.9 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura saw 66.6 millimetres of rainfall, 15% below normal, and rainfall in Odisha was 44% below normal at 49.5 millimetres. Gangetic West Bengal received 34.8 millimetres of rain, 60% below the average, the data showed. Rainfall over Bihar was 32% below normal at 50.0 millimetres.

 

Of the four homogenous regions in the country, only east and northeast India have recorded below-normal showers in the southwest monsoon season so far. From Jun. 1 to Jul. 29, east and the northeast India received 567.4 millimetres of rainfall, 22% below normal for the period, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. The country as a whole has recorded 456.4 millimetres of rainfall, 7% above the normal for the period.

 

Of the 161 reservoirs, six were at full capacity, up from three reservoirs a week ago, the data from the Central Water Commission showed. The number of reservoirs with water levels of 40% or less fell to 33 from 37 a week ago.

 

The water level in reservoirs in the northern region stood at 10.194 billion cubic metres, or 51.35% of the total live storage capacity, up from 26.69% a year ago. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the western region, which comprises Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa, the water level in reservoirs was 23.299 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 62.37% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 39.88% a year ago.

 

Reservoirs in the central region held 28.726 billion cubic metres or 59.12% of the total live storage capacity of 28 reservoirs in the region, up from 32.46% a year ago. The region comprises Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh.

 

The water level in the southern region was 38.327 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 69.76% of the total live storage capacity of the 45 reservoirs in the region. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was 48.17% of the total live storage capacity.  End
