Indian telecom operators net add 2 million mobile users in June

NEW DELHI – Indian telecommunications operators net added 2.00 million mobile users in June, lower than the 2.10 million users added in May, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Tuesday. The net new additions were led by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., which net added 1.91 million users during the month, compared to 2.70 million in the month-ago period. Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel Ltd. net added 763,482 users in June, up from 275,621 users added in May. Other players in the industry, such as Vodafone Idea Ltd., Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. lost subscribers in June.
Debt-ridden telecom major Vodafone Idea lost 217,816 users in June, slightly lower than the 274,103 users in May. BSNL and MTNL lost 305,766 and 152,657 subscribers during the month, respectively. At the end of June, the total mobile subscribers in India stood at 1.16 billion, up 0.17% from the previous month. Within this, private sector service providers Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea collectively held a market share of around 92.20% while state-owned BSNL and MTNL had a market share of only 7.80%. The market shares of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea stood at 41.02%, 33.62%, and 17.56%, respectively, on Jun. 30.
According to data from the regulatory body, a total of 13.58 million subscribers submitted their requests for mobile number portability in June. The number of active wireless mobile subscribers in June was 1.08 billion, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register. The register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network.
