NEW DELHI – India and the US have held five rounds of negotiations for the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement, with the latest one held between Jul. 14 and Jul. 18 in Washington, Minister of State for Commerce Jitin Prasada said. The two sides had launched the negotiations for the trade deal in March, Prasada said.
"India has taken requisite steps to reserve all its rights consistent with the provisions of the WTO (World Trade Organization) Agreements," Prasada said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on the steps taken by New Delhi against the tariffs imposed by the US.
The US has levied an extra 10?seline tariff on imports from all nations. Washington has also imposed an additional 25% tariff on the import of automobiles and certain automobile parts, and a 50% tariff on steel products. Although the US has announced that it will impose country-wise reciprocal tariffs starting Aug. 1, there is no clarity yet on whether Washington will levy the reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods as well.
US President Donald Trump, who has sent individual letters to some nations informing them about the reciprocal tariffs due to hit them, has not yet announced any additional duties on India. On Apr. 2, Trump announced a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods. The tariffs mentioned in the latest letters sent to some countries differ from what was unveiled in April.
India is hoping to strike an interim trade deal with Washington to insulate Indian exports from the reciprocal tariffs. But the next round of negotiations is scheduled in the second half of August, after the new reciprocal tariffs are likely to kick in, Informist reported. A delegation of officials from Washington is expected to visit New Delhi for the next round of negotiations.
Reciprocal tariffs, if imposed, will significantly hurt India's exports, as the US is India's top export destination with a share of nearly 20% in total outbound shipments. India exported goods worth $86.51 billion to the US in the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade surplus of $40.82 billion, according to commerce ministry data. End
