MUMBAI – Domestic benchmark indices recovered from a slow start to Tuesday's session and ended higher to snap a three-session losing run. The recovery came on the back of investors covering some of their short positions ahead of the monthly expiry of the derivatives contracts of the Nifty 50 due Thursday, analysts said. Heavyweights Reliance Industries, Larsen & Toubro, and Bharti Airtel ended up 1-2% and pushed the 50-stock index higher.
The Nifty 50 ended up 0.6% at 24821.10 points, up 140.20 points or 0.6%, and the BSE Sensex closed at 81337.95 points, up 446.93 points or 0.6%. Some analysts said the market is in an oversold zone having fared poorly over the past few weeks, which might attract further short covering ahead of the derivatives contracts expiry. Jio Financial Services ended over 4% higher and was the top gainer on the Nifty 50 ahead of a board meeting for fundraising due Wednesday.
Larsen & Toubro closed over 2% higher ahead of its June quarter earnings due after market hours Tuesday. The company had earlier in the day said it had won an 'ultra-mega' order for its hydrocarbon offshore segment in West Asia. L&T classifies orders worth over INR 150 bln as 'ultra-mega'. Asian Paints ended nearly 2% higher after its bottom line for the quarter came in slightly above expectations. The paintmaker said the industry saw a marginal improvement in urban demand during the quarter. On the other hand, SBI Life Insurance Co., Axis Bank, and Tata Consultancy Services ended around 1% lower and were the worst-hit in the index.
Broader market indices also bounced back after three sessions of losses, with small-cap indices outperforming their mid-cap counterparts. The fear guage India VIX ended over 4% lower, having risen nearly 15% over the past three sessions.
Most sectoral indices also ended higher after a slow start to the session. Nifty Realty ended 1.6% higher and was the top gainer amid sectoral indices, with Lodha Developers and DLF closing 3.6% and 1.7% higher, respectively. Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare, Nifty Infrastructure, Nifty Oil & Gas, and Nifty Metal – all ended over 1% higher. Nifty India Defence closed 0.4% lower and was the only sectoral index to end in the red.
Among other stocks, Apar Industries rose to a six-month high and ended up over 12% after both its top line and bottom line for the June quarter surged on year. Tata Chemicals ended 7% higher after global brokerage firm Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock to 'overweight' from 'underweight' and raised its target price to INR 1,127 from INR 839. PNC Infratech closed nearly 7% higher after it won an INR 29.57-billion order in Chhattisgarh.
Go Digit General Insurance rose to a nine-month high and ended nearly 5% higher after both its net profit and total income rose on year. Varun Beverages closed the session over 5% higher after its June quarter bottom line beat analysts' estimates by a considerable margin. Torrent Pharmaceuticals rose to an all-time high and ended 4% higher after brokerages were positive on the stock post a robust set of earnings numbers for the June quarter. Citi Research increased its target price for the company's stock by 9.5% to INR 4,380 on a healthy and in-line quarter and solid traction across the markets.
Zen Technologies hit a 5% lower band at INR 1,606.20 immediately after the session started. The stock was down for the fourth straight session after both its top line and bottom line fell around 38% on year in the June quarter. Home First Finance Co. India also ended nearly 5% lower, down for the second straight session despite reporting robust earnings for the quarter. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders fell over 2% as the company's bottom line fell on year during the quarter due to higher expenses.
