MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said a low pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh is likely to cause extremely heavy rainfall over west Madhya Pradesh Tuesday and east Rajasthan till Thursday. The weather bureau has issued a red alert in west Madhya Pradesh for Tuesday and east Rajasthan till Wednesday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The weather bureau also issued a warning for moderate to high risk of flash floods in a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of west Madhya Pradesh and east Rajasthan till Wednesday. Surface runoff or inundation is also likely to occur in some places and low-lying areas in these sub-divisions.
There is an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Punjab and another over northwest Uttar Pradesh which is likely to cause isolated very heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, west Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir during the next two days. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over northwest India till Monday.
The weather bureau said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya during the next seven days. The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase from Friday, it added. Light or moderate rainfall along with thunderstorm and lightning is likely over northeast India till Monday.
Meanwhile, the intensity of rainfall over south India is expected to decrease during the next 6-7 days and over central India from Friday, the weather department said. Strong surface winds are likely over southern India during the next three days. End
