MUMBAI – Motherson Sumi Wiring Ltd. reported a small fall in its net profit for the June quarter as growth in expenses outstriped the growth in revenue and total income. Coincidentally, the on-year fall in net profit was the same as the on-year fall in other operating income – INR 57 million.
Motherson Sumi Wiring reported a net profit of INR 1.43 billion for the latest quarter, down 3.8% from INR 1.48 billion in the year-ago quarter. The company reported revenues of INR 24.94 billion, up 14% on year.
Expenses, on the other hand, rose 16% on year to INR 23.05 billion, driven mainly by a 19% increase in raw material costs and a 27% increase in employee expense. Raw material costs rose to INR 16.98 billion for the latest quarter from INR 14.30 billion in the year-ago quarter while employee costs rose to INR 4.76 billion from INR 3.76 billion over the same period.
"Profitability ex Greenfields is stable; ramp up of Greenfields will further enhance the same", the company said in a press release. "While the ramp-up at a specific Greenfield project is growing at a slower-than-expected rate due to market dynamics, we remain on track with our strategic expansion plans to support future requirements of OEMs," Vivek Chaand Sehgal, chairman of the company said in the press release.
The company's Maharashtra plant, which makes powertrains for internal combustion engine vehicles as well as electric vehicles, started production in the trailing quarter.
The company said the start of production for electric vehicle and internal combustion engine powertrains at its new unit at Navagam, Gujarat was delayed. The unit would now start production only in the March quarter instead of the September quarter as planned originally.
The ramp up of volumes of electric vehicle powertrains at the new plant in Pune was also delayed and would start from the September quarter instead of the originally planned March quarter of the previous financial year, the company said. This was caused by the delay in product launches by customers of the company, Motherson Sumi said. The company's Haryana plant would start production from the September quarter, as originally planned, the company said.
Monday, shares of Motherson Sumi closed at INR 40.01, down 1.2%, after the company declared its earnings. End
