NEW DELHI – Growth in India's industrial production fell to a 10-month low of 1.5% in June, data released Monday by the statistics ministry showed. Industrial output growth moderated last month because of a decline in mining and electricity output, data showed.

At 1.5%, the June IIP growth print was below expectations. Economists polled by Informist had estimated growth in industrial output at 2.0% in June. Industrial output, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production, had risen 4.9% in June 2024. The May print was revised higher to 1.9% from 1.2% originally.

The mining sector's output fell 8.7% on year in June, the worst performance since July 2020, and electricity sector output contracted 2.6%. Output for the two sectors declined likely because of rains throughout the country in June, economists said. In May, mining sector output fell 0.1% and electricity production was down 4.7%.

Growth in the output of the manufacturing sector, which has the biggest weightage in the IIP, rose in June. Manufacturing production rose 3.9% on year last month compared with 3.2% growth in May.

Within the use-based classification, production of primary goods and consumer non-durable goods fell on year in June. Primary goods output contracted 3.0% on year last month, the worst performance since February 2021. Production of consumer non-durables fell 0.4% on year in June but the the pace of decline was slower than 1.0% in May. Output of intermediate goods, infrastructure goods, and consumer durables grew at a quicker pace in June compared with May.

Industrial output has grown 2.0% in the first three months of the current financial year, sharply lower than the 5.4% growth in Apr-Jun 2024. The 2.0% growth in industrial ouput growth in Apr-Jun is the slowest in 11 quarters.

ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar said excess rains in the June quarter dampened electricity generation and mining output. "Besides, the growth in manufacturing volumes slowed somewhat between these quarters. Given this, and the slower, albeit healthy, growth in construction-related volume indicators such cement output and finished steel consumption, ICRA expects the industrial GVA (gross value added) growth to decelerate in Q1 FY26 (Apr-Jun) from 6.5% uptick seen in Q4 FY25 (Jan-Mar)," Nayar said in a note.

The following tables detail year-on-year changes in industrial output in June:
