MUMBAI – Farmers across the country have sown kharif crops over 83 million hectares as of Friday, 4% higher from 80 million hectares in the same period last year, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. As of Friday, nearly 76% of the normal kharif area of 110 million hectares has been covered across the country, higher than 65% covered as of Jul. 18. During the same period last year, 73% of the normal area was covered.

Early onset of the southwest monsoon has boosted sowing of the kharif crops across the country. As of Friday, the country received 410.2 millimetres of rainfall during the season, 5?ove the normal rainfall for the period, data from the India Meteorological Department showed.

The area under paddy, moong, and maize rose from a year ago while that of tur, soybean, and cotton fell. The area sown under paddy was up over 13% at 24.5 million hectares as of Friday. Paddy is the largest food grain crop, in terms of both acreage and output, sown during the kharif season.

The area under pulses rose to 9.3 million hectares as of Friday, up from 9.0 million hectares during the same period last year. Although total pulses acreage was up, the area under tur, the largest kharif pulse, fell over 8% on year to 3.5 million hectares, the data showed. Among pulses, moong acreage saw the highest on-year rise of 16% on year to 3.1 million hectares.

The acreage of coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, was up nearly 4% on year at 16.1 million hectares, mainly supported by a rise in the area under maize. The area under maize rose to 8.6 million hectares from 7.9 million hectares during the same period a year ago.

Oilseed acreage fell over 2% on year to 16.7 million hectares due to a fall in the soybean acreage. The area under soybean fell nearly 4% on year to 11.7 million hectares, the data showed. The area under groundnut rose nearly a per cent to 4.1 million hectares as of Friday.

The area under cotton fell over 2% on year to 10.3 million hectares and sugarcane acreage fell slightly to 5.52 million hectares.
