MUMBA – Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east Rajasthan till Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said Monday, adding it has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The well-marked low pressure area weakened into a low pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and east Rajasthan on Monday. A western disturbance is lying to the northwest of the country, while a trough runs from the northeast Arabian Sea to southeast Uttar Pradesh.
These weather systems are also likely to cause heavy rainfall over most parts of northwest India, the weather department said. Very heavy rain is also expected over parts of Uttarakhand and east Uttar Pradesh on Monday, and over west Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the Western Himalayan region till Thursday, and adjoining plains in the next 2–3 days, the department said.
The weather department has warned of a low to moderate risk of flash floods for the next 24 hours over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Himachal Pradesh, which include the Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts. Similar warnings have also been issued for the Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Haridwar, Nanital, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garwal, Udham Singh Nagar, and Uttarkashi districts in Uttarakhand.
The weather department's agricultural meteorology division has issued an advisory to farmers in east Rajasthan to postpone the sowing of moong, bajra, guar, and sesame till the cessation of heavy rainfall in the region. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh have been advised to postpone the sowing of bajra and to drain out the excess water in fields of soybean, tur, and transplanted rice.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over northeast India in the next seven days, and over west India till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. End
