KOLKATA/MUMBAI – Terming its foray into the lithium-ion battery manufacturing business a key pillar for future growth, Exide Industries Ltd. Saturday said the company is set to commission its lithium-ion battery making plant in the current financial year ending March.

Addressing the company's shareholders at its 78th Annual General Meeting, Chairman Sridhar Gorthi said the construction of this plant is in an advanced stage. Exide is entering the lithium-ion manufacturing business via a partnership with China-based SVOLT Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and has so far invested over INR 37 billion in this project. This business is housed under its wholly-owned subsidiary Exide Energy Solutions Ltd. which is in the business of manufacturing lithium-ion cells, modules and packs incorporating a portfolio of multiple chemistries and form factors.

Exide is setting up the first phase of its 12-gigawatt hour lithium-ion battery making factory near Bengaluru in Karnataka. Based on demand for such batteries after its rollout, Exide will chalk out the second phase of this plant.

Avik Roy, managing director and chief executive officer at Exide, said the outlook for lead acid batteries remain positive in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) and the company is strengthening its order book via increasing partnerships with original equipment makers. The automotive industry remains the key revenue and profit generator for Exide.

However, Roy said that during FY25, the company faced demand headwinds in Europe on account of the geopolitical tensions in the region, and demand from the telecom segment weakened. The completion of 5G rollout and the preference of telecom tower companies for lithium-ion batteries affected demand for Exide's current batteries in this segment which are lead-acid based, he said.

Exide Industries is increasingly adopting use of digital technology to improve the company's operations, Roy added.

Friday, shares of Exide closed 2.7% down at INR 380.60 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
