MUMBAI – Banking shares are expected to remain under pressure next week after they tumbled on Friday on the back of weak earnings from multiple banks. "Bears tightened their grip on Dalal Street on Friday... dragging benchmark indices sharply lower amid relentless selling in heavyweight financial stocks," Bajaj Broking Research said in a note.   

The Nifty Bank index closed 0.9% lower on Friday at 56528.90, with all its constituents ending in the red. IndusInd Bank led the losses ahead of its quarterly earnings on Monday. "For Bank Nifty, the short-term outlook is weak, but a fresh sell-off is possible only if it falls below the 50-day SMA at 56300. Below this level, it could slip to 56000-55500. Conversely, if it moves above the 20-day SMA at 57000, it could rally to 57500-57800," Kotak Securities said.

IndusInd Bank, which incurred a net loss of INR 22.36 billion in the March quarter, is expected to report a net profit of INR 7.21 billion in the June quarter, down 66% from a year ago, according to the average of estimates from 13 brokerages. Bank of India is also scheduled to declare its earnings next week. 

Among the banks that declared results this week, Bank of Baroda reported a net profit of INR 45.41 billion for the June quarter, up 1.9% on year. Canara Bank posted a net profit of INR 47.52 billion, up nearly 22% on year.
