MUMBAI – The southwest monsoon is likely to be active over parts of central and east India and the country's west coast in the next 4-5 days, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather bureau issued red and orange alerts for parts of central, east, and west India due to the likelihood of "extremely heavy" rainfall Friday and Saturday.

The low-pressure area that formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal Thursday has intensified into a depression Friday over the same region. This weather system is likely to continue to move west-northwest across Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and Jharkhand in the next 24 hours. There is also an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Chhattisgarh and a trough running from the northeast Arabian Sea to this weather system.

Under the influence of these weather systems, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh during the week. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of central and east India till Wednesday.

The weather bureau said there is an offshore trough at the sea level along the west coast from Maharashtra to Kerala. This is likely to lead to extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan and the ghat areas of central Maharashtra till Saturday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of western India till Tuesday.

The weather bureau has issued a red alert for "extremely heavy" rainfall in eight subdivisions for Friday. The alert has been issued in Jharkhand, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and coastal Karnataka. The department has issued a red alert in Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, central Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa till Saturday and in Madhya Pradesh Saturday. An orange alert has been issued in Madhya Pradesh, east Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar in east and central India for Friday.

A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest weather warning. An orange alert is issued when rainfall is likely to exceed 115.6 millimetres and go up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.

The weather department has issued a warning of moderate to high risk of flash floods in a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha during the next 24 hours. Surface runoff or inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas, it added.

Apart from these weather systems, there is a trough running from Haryana to the cyclonic circulation associated with the depression over the Gangetic West Bengal. This is likely to lead to very heavy rainfall over parts of northwest India till Tuesday. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east Rajasthan Sunday, it said.  End
