Domestic air passenger traffic dips to multi-month low in June

NEW DELHI – Domestic airlines carried 13.60 million passengers in June, up 3% on year, but the lowest in absolute terms since September last year, data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed Thursday. Airlines flew 85.17 million passengers between January and June this year, 7.3% more than in the corresponding period a year ago.
InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s IndiGo airline retained the number one position in the domestic market with a market share of 64.5%, largely unchanged from a month ago. The company carried 8.8 million passengers during the month, lower than the 9.1 million in May. During the June quarter, it had a market share of 64.4% and flew 27 million passengers, lower than the 27.7 million passengers flown in the March quarter. Its passenger load factor was 85.4% in June, up from 85.1% in May.
In June, Air India group's market share increased 50 basis points from May to 27.1%. The company flew 3.7 million passengers in June, a tad lower than in May. Its market share in the June quarter stood at 26.9%, up 40 bps from the March quarter. The company flew 11.3 million passengers last quarter, about a percent lower sequentially. Air India group, which includes Air India and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express, saw its passenger load factor increasing to 81.5% in June from 80.2% in May.
Akasa Air's market share was 5.3% in June, the same as in May. It flew 722,000 passengers during the month, lower than the 748,000 flown in May. Its market share for the quarter was 5.2%, improving 40 bps sequentially. Akasa Air's passenger load factor remained unchanged on a monthly basis at 91.4%.
Ajay Singh-led SpiceJet Ltd.'s market share fell further to 1.9% in June from 2.4% in May. The company flew 261,000 passengers in June, down 23% sequentially. Its market share during the quarter fell to 2.3% from 3.2% in the March quarter. Its passenger load factor improved to 85.2%, up 120 bps from May. End
