India receives 20% below-normal rainfall at 7.5 mm Wednesday, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 7.5 millimetres of rain on Wednesday, 20% below the normal of 9.4 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, three received below-normal rainfall while one recorded above-normal showers.
The southern peninsula recorded 11.7 millimetres of rainfall, 60% above the normal of 7.3 millimetres, the data showed. Rainfall in east and northeast India was 75% below normal at 3.4 millimetres, with Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar recording "large deficient" rainfall.
Central India received 20% below normal showers at 9.0 millimetres. Rainfall in northwest India was 22% below-normal at 5.3 millimetres, according to the data. Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall Wednesday was "large excess" in five, of which four belong to the southern region.
Rainfall was "excess" in three, "normal" in eight, "deficient" in 10, and "large deficient" in 10, data from the department showed. Since Jun. 1, the country has received 389.1 millimetres of rainfall, 5% above normal for the period, the data showed. End
