NEW DELHI – The Reserve Bank of India bought dollars on a net basis in the foreign exchange market for only the second time in eight months in May, according to data released Wednesday by the central bank. On a net basis, the RBI bought $1.76 billion against net sales of $1.66 billion a month ago.

The last time the RBI bought dollars on a net basis was in March, when it bought $14.36 billion, which was a near four-year high. The RBI bought $9.12 billion on a gross basis in May, slightly lower than the $10.11 billion purchased in April. The central bank's gross sales in May were $7.36 billion against $11.77 billion in the previous month.

The central bank says it buys and sells dollars in the foreign exchange market to curb excess volatility.

In May, the Indian currency depreciated 1.3% against the dollar. The RBI's gross purchases and sales in the foreign exchange futures market in May were nil, thus, bringing the net position to nil as well. The central bank's net position in the currency futures market was nil in the previous month as well. The RBI's net outstanding position in the futures segment at the end of May was also nil, unchanged from end April.

The central bank's net outstanding forward dollar sales fell to $65.22 billion in May, against $72.58 billion in the previous month.  End
