MUMBAI – India has achieved 20% ethanol blending in petrol, from 1.5% in 2014, five years ahead of schedule, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said in a social media post on X Wednesday. This has resulted in savings of INR 1.36 trillion in foreign exchange, according to the post.
The programme has also reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 69.8 million tonnes. The government has paid INR 1.18 trillion to farmers and INR 1.96 trillion to distilleries under the ethanol-blended petrol programme. The programme has also helped reduce dependence on imported crude oil, with domestic production of ethanol rising to 6.61 billion litres as of June 2025, from 380 million litres in 2014.
According to latest data from the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell, state-owned oil companies achieved 18.9% cumulative ethanol blending with petrol during Nov-Jun. Initially, the government had set the target of achieving 20% ethanol blending by 2030 but then advanced it to the ethanol year 2025-26 (Nov-Oct). End
