NEW DELHI – Gita Gopinath, who has been serving as the first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund since 2022, will leave the multilateral organisation at the end of August. Gopinath, who joined the IMF in January 2019 as its first ever female chief economist, will return to Harvard University, where she will be the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey professor of economics in the department of economics.

"I now return to my roots in academia, where I look forward to continuing to push the research frontier in international finance and macroeconomics to address global challenges, and to training the next generation of economists," Gopinath was quoted as saying in a press release. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva is expected to name the successor of Gopinath in "due course", the Fund said.  End
