NEW DELHI - Vice-President of India and ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar Monday tendered his resignation from the post for health reasons. In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said he was resigning with immediate effect "to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice".
"I am deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights I have gained as Vice President in our great democracy," Dhankhar wrote in the letter. "It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India's remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation's history has been a true honor."
Dhankhar further said, "The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon'ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished at and embedded in my memory."
Dhankhar had assumed the office of vice-president and ex-officio chairman of the House of the States on Aug. 11, 2022. He was administered the oath of office by President Murmu. He had earlier served as governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022.
Dhankhar's tenure as chairman of the Upper House was marked by several controversies and even witnessed an attempt by the Opposition to bring a no-confidence motion against him. Several opposition parties in 2024 submitted notice to move a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar, accusing him of indulging in partisanship and preventing opposition members from raising issues in the House while giving free rein to members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to raise their issues. The notice was rejected by the deputy chairman of the House on technical grounds. End
