NEW DELHI – Authorities are waiting for the final findings of an investigation into the ill-fated crash of Air India AI171 Ahmedabad-London flight in order to find out the exact cause of the crash and suggest further corrective measures, Civil Aviation Minister K.R. Naidu said in the Lok Sabha Monday. According to the preliminary report based on the investigation carried out by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, fuel switches transitioned to an unfavourable 'cutoff' position, seconds after which the Boeing 787 flight crashed just outside the Ahmedabad airport.
These preliminary findings into the Jun. 12 crash were followed by ample speculation in multiple sections of Indian and international media. News agency Reuters, citing unnamed sources, alleged that one of the two captains cut the flow of fuel to the plane's engines. The investigation into the crash, which claimed 260 lives, is still going on, the minister said.
"The media is trying to promote their own view point", Naidu said, responding to a query on the matter. "We are seeing the investigation through facts; we want to find out exactly what happened," he said, adding that corrective measures can be taken only after the investigation is complete. "The AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) has a very definitive thorough rule-based process, they are totally unbiased, they are looking into the facts," Naidu said.
Following the crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation formed a committee to study corrective measures that other countries follow in a bid to avoid such incidents in the future, the minister said. "We have a very good, robust safety mechanism in India, but we want to bring down incidents to zero. We are being more open to suggestions now", he said. End
