NEW DELHI – The government on Sunday held an all-party meeting ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, that starts Monday. The session will have 21 sittings and conclude on Aug. 21. The meeting was attended by 54 members from 51 parties. Bharatiya Janata Party President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju represented the government at the meeting.
"...40 leaders presented their opinion on behalf of their parties. It was very constructive. All leaders stated the position of their parties and the issues that they want to bring in this session," Rijiju said following the meeting.
"There are several issues on which the parties have opined that they should be discussed in Parliament. We are ready for discussions with an open heart. We work as per rules and tradition and hold these in great value. So, we will discuss every issue but as per rules and tradition."
Rijiju sought the cooperation of all the parties for smooth functioning of Parliament during the session. "We might be political parties of different ideologies but it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that Parliament functions properly," he said.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties raised their demands for discussion on Pahalgam terror attack, special intensive revision of electoral roll in Bihar and Operation Sindoor. "The genuine demand of the entire House today was to have a full-fledged discussion on the terrorist attack at Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor and (US President) Donald Trump's statement regarding the ceasefire. These are the main core issues," Revolutionary Socialist Party leader N.K. Premchandran said.
The opposition parties also demanded that the session should begin with the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the House, Premchandran said. Congress party leader Pramod Tiwari said the opposition clearly conveyed to the government during the all-party meeting that Operation Sindoor, the issue of Bihar, the issue of foreign policy are of utmost importance that will be raised during the Session.
"The conflict on our borders especially with countries coming together to form a two front axis. And also the right of every citizen to vote and the concerns regarding the special intensive revision in Bihar. On all these issues, as the head of the government, it is incumbent and the moral responsibility of the prime minister to speak to the nation through the corridors of Parliament," Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said.
