NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across various parts of India till Friday. An active monsoon trough and cyclonic winds are expected to bring intense showers to northwest, central, eastern, and southern India, the weather bureau said.
The bureau predicted extremely heavy rainfall lashing parts of south-western Rajasthan on Saturday. Extremely heavy rainfall signifies more than 210 millimetres of rainfall in 24 hours.
The agromet division of the weather bureau has advised farmers in Rajasthan to take precautions amid anticipated heavy rainfall. In the Arid Western Plain Zone, farmers are recommended to postpone the sowing of kharif crops and ensure drainage in already sown crops like green gram and pearl millet. In other zones, farmers are advised to drain excess water from fields of crops like sugarcane, rice, and maize to prevent waterlogging and crop damage.
The depression over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southwest Uttar Pradesh has moved west-northwestwards and lay centred at 0830 IST on Saturday, the weather bureau said. It is currently lying over northwest and adjoining areas of northeast Rajasthan, bringing heavy rain to the area. The depression is likely to move west-northwestwards across northwest Rajasthan and weaken gradually into a well-marked low-pressure area during the next 12 hours, the bureau further said.
Affected by the weather pattern, other parts of northwest India such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are also likely to be hit with heavy rains till Thursday, the bureau said. Western Uttar Pradesh is likely to be hit by heavy rains till Monday. Punjab and Haryana will also witness heavy rainfall till Tuesday and on Thursday. Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several north Indian states, including Uttarakhand till Tuesday, in Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh till Monday, and in Himachal Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday, the bureau said.
In western India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at some places over Konkan and Goa, the ghat areas of central Maharashtra till Friday, and over north Gujarat on Saturday. Heavy rainfall is seen lashing Saurashtra and Kutch on Sunday.
In the southern peninsular India, extremely heavy rainfall, higher than 210 millimetres, is very likely over some places of Kerala and coastal Karnataka till Sunday. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Mahe, coastal and southern interior Karnataka till Friday.
In eastern and central India, isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand till Friday. Very heavy rainfall is likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Sunday, the bureau said.
States in northeast India such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura are likely to receive heavy rainfall in isolated pockets till Monday, and then on Thursday and Friday, the bureau said. Very heavy rains will hit Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, it said. End
