NEW DELHI – In a bid to boost demand for lightweight gold jewellery, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs Friday has notified hallmarking standards for 9-karat gold jewellery.
So far, hallmarking standards were specified for gold jewellery of 14 karats and above, including for 24-, 23-, 22-, 20-, and 18-karat gold. The market believes the inclusion of 9-karat gold in the hallmarking regime is likely to provide a fillip to demand for lighter gold jewellery items.
According to the World Gold Council Research's June report, demand for gold has remained subdued and has been largely centered around need-based purchases.
According to media reports, the India Bullion and Jewellers Association had been advocating for the hallmarking move for over a year. The order is expected to boost gold sales in rural areas where budgets for gold jewellery are lower, and also raise the bullion's appeal to younger consumers in urban areas.
The announcement comes ahead of the festival season, during which gold demand typically rises. Demand typically increases from Rakshabandhan in August and continues till Diwali, followed by the wedding season beginning in November.
Hallmarking is a process that checks and certifies the purity of precious metals, like gold, in jewelry or other items. A hallmark is a stamp or mark that guarantees the metal's fineness or purity, providing assurance to consumers about the quality of the product. End
