MUMBAI – The next week for the Bank Nifty index is expected to be dictated by a host of earnings of large and small banks, starting with the biggest private sector lender, HDFC Bank, on Saturday that is expected to report a mere 7% increase in its net profit for Apr-Jun. Other major banks like ICICI Bank and YES Bank will also declare their earnings on Saturday.
The Nifty Bank index closed 1% lower on Friday at 56283, with all its constituents but ICICI Bank and IndusInd Bank ending in the red. Axis Bank shares lost the most after it reported tepid earnings for the June quarter. ICICI Bank ended 0.5% up ahead of its earnings on Saturday. According to the average of estimates from 15 brokerage firms, ICICI Bank is expected to report a 7.5% on-year increase in net profit to INR 118.88 billion.
Axis Bank, which reported dismal earnings for Apr-Jun, saw its shares fall more than 6% to a near-three-month low of INR 1,086, following which brokerages turned cautious on the stock. Nuvama Institutional Equities downgraded the stock to 'hold' from 'buy' and cut its target price by 16% to INR 1,180 due to "repeated volatility in asset quality and growth."
For the week ahead, Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research, Kotak Securities, said, "Bank Nifty is trading in a range and by closing below 57100 it has lost momentum. Above 57100, it has scope to move towards the ultimate resistance level of 57500/57600. It has support at 56500 and at 56300."
In its technical view for the index, Bajaj Broking said, "Bank Nifty formed a sizeable bear candle, signalling profit booking at higher levels for the second session in a row. The index on Friday's session breached the last 10 sessions' consolidation range 56,500-57,600, signalling extended decline. A follow-through weakness will open further downside towards 55,000 levels. Key short-term term support is placed at 56,000–55,500 region."
