NEW DELHI – The government has revised the base year for CPI for agricultural labourers and rural labourers to 2019 from 1986-87, the labour bureau, an attached office of the labour ministry, said Friday. CPI for agricultural labourers and CPI for rural labourers is used to revise minimum wages for agricultural labour and rural labour in different states.

As per the new series, India's annual inflation based on CPI for agricultural labourers was 1.42% in June. CPI inflation for rural labourers was 1.73% in June. In May, based on the old series, CPI-agricultural labourers inflation was 2.84%, while rural labourers inflation was 3.48%.

"The annual inflation trends under the revised CPI-agricultural labourers and rural labourers series are more stable and reflective of ground realities," the labour bureau said. "The updated indices will strengthen policymaking for schemes such as MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act), MSP (minimum support price) fixation, and PM-POSHAN."

In the new series, the government will calculate the prices of goods sold through the public distribution system using the admissibility concept instead of availability as in the old series. The revised series covers 34 states and Union territories, against 20 states covered in the old series. Prices are collected from 787 sample villages in the new series, against 600 in the old series. The new series will cover 150–200 items, against 65–106 in the old series.  End
