NEW DELHI – The Monsoon Session of Parliament, commencing on Monday, is expected to be stormy, as it will be the first session after the Operation Sindoor, the Pahalgam attack, and the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The opposition parties will attempt to question the government regarding the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections, and also seek clarifications about US President Donald Trump's claim that he mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor.

According to a Trinamool Congress member, Bihar's electoral roll revision is a major issue, and the party would raise it during the session. The opposition parties, including the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, have accused the Narendra Modi government of manipulating the electoral rolls revision exercise to steal votes from Bihar residents a few months ahead of the assembly polls. Earlier on Tuesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that the Opposition wants a productive session. "For that to happen a number of strategic, political, foreign policy and socio-economic issues that are of great public concern need to be debated and discussed," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The Apr. 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam was the deadliest attack on civilians after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The government launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam attack on May 7 to neutralise terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. While the government didn't confirm the numbers, there have been reports of Indian aircraft being shot down while conducting airstrikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The opposition parties are likely to ask the government about the outcome and damages suffered by India during Operation Sindoor.

The session will have 21 sittings and is scheduled to conclude on Aug. 21. The government will convene an all-party meeting on Sunday, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, to reach a consensus among the parties on issues to be discussed during the session.

The government has listed eight new bills for introduction and passage in the session, including the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025, which seeks to foster ease of doing business. The Income Tax Bill, 2025, introduced during the Budget session, is also expected to be taken up for passage. The Select Committee of the Lok Sabha, which has adopted a report making 285 suggestions on the income tax bill, will submit the report to the Lok Sabha speaker on Monday. Apart from the income tax bill, the government may move seven other pending bills for passing. End
