NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday laid foundation stone and inaugurated multiple projects worth INR 124 billion in Bihar and West Bengal and held rallies in both states. Modi dedicated projects worth INR 70 billion in poll bound Bihar and slammed the previous Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress led governments for underdevelopment of the state. The assembly elections are scheduled in Bihar in Oct-Nov and the Election Commission of India is yet to announce the dates.
Addressing a rally in Motihari, Modi said that during the 10 years of United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre, Bihar received only around INR 2 trillion. He remarked that this was a form of political retaliation against the government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Modi said that after coming to power in 2014, his government ended this politics of vendetta against Bihar and allocated nearly INR 9 trillion for Bihar's development.
Prime Minister Modi further alleged that under previous governments, development was stalled and it was nearly impossible for funds meant for the poor to reach them. He criticised then leadership for being focused solely on looting money meant for the poor.
Modi addressed his second rally of the day in West Bengal's Durgapur and dedicated projects worth INR 54 billion to the nation. The prime minister said that Durgapur, known as a steel city, is also a major hub of India's labour force. Modi emphasised that the projects launched on Friday will enhance connectivity in the region and boost gas-based transport and the gas-based economy and reinforce Durgapur's identity as a Steel City. He laid the foundation stone for Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd City Gas Distribution project in Bankura and Purulia district of West Bengal worth around INR 19.50 billion. It will provide piped natural gas connections to households, commercial establishments and industrial customers, and provide compressed natural gas at retail outlets and also create employment opportunities in the region, Modi said.
