IMD sees heavy to very heavy rain over MP, UP, Rajasthan during next 2 days

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan in the next two days, as the low pressure area over southwest Bihar and Uttar Pradesh Thursday turned into a depression and is currently over southeast Uttar Pradesh.
Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh on Thursday and Rajasthan on Friday due to the weather system, IMD said. This depression is likely to move west-northwest across south Uttar Pradesh and adjoining north Madhya Pradesh over the next two days.
Under the influence of the above weather conditions, red alert has been issued in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh for Thursday and in Rajasthan for Friday, the weather bureau said. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The weather bureau also said that very heavy rainfall is likely over northwest India till Wednesday. Light or moderate rainfall at many places along with thunderstorm and lightning is likely over western Himalayan region and many places over the plains during the next seven days. There is also a western disturbance as a trough and an upper air cyclonic circulation over central parts of Pakistan.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east and central India till Wednesday. Very heavy rainfall is likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Sunday, the IMD said. A few parts of Konkan and Goa are likely to record heavy rainfall till Wednesday, while central Maharashtra during Sunday and Wednesday.
There is also east-west trough running through Kerala and Tamil Nadu and an upper air cyclonic circulation over north interior Karnataka which are causing heavy showers over parts of southern India. Extremely heavy rain is likely over parts of south India till Sunday and heavy to very heavy rain till Wednesday.
Kerala and south interior Karnataka have been issued red alert till Friday due to extremely heavy rainfall, while the red alert in coastal Karnataka is only for Thursday, the IMD said. An orange alert has been issued in Tamil Nadu till Sunday due to very heavy rainfall. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours. End
