Oil cos achieve 18.9% ethanol blending in Nov-Jun, 19.9% in June

NEW DELHI – State-owned oil companies procured 6.37 billion litres of ethanol in the eight months from November, according to the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell. During Nov-Jun, the companies achieved 18.9% cumulative ethanol blending with petrol. In June, the companies procured 875 million litres of ethanol and achieved 19.9% blending with petrol, the data showed.
To reduce dependence on crude oil, the government has set a target of achieving 20% ethanol blending in the ethanol year 2025-26 (Nov-Oct). To achieve this target, India needs about 10.16 billion litres of ethanol.
On the government's plan to increase ethanol blending beyond 20%, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said earlier this month that the decision would be made after consulting all stakeholders. "We have (almost) reached a 20% blending target... now moving forward from here, we will require stakeholder consultation," he had told reporters.
Higher blending faces the challenge of vehicle compatibility in India. "Using 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) results in a marginal reduction in fuel efficiency for four-wheelers designed for E10 and calibrated for E20," according to an inter-ministerial committee's report on biofuels. End
