MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said parts of northwest India are likely to witness very heavy rainfall due to a well-marked low pressure area over northwest Rajasthan and as a western disturbance as a trough passed through the weather system. These conditions are likely to prevail over parts of the region till Tuesday, it added. A few parts of southern India are also likely to record heavy to very heavy rains till Tuesday, the weather bureau said.
Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, west Rajasthan, and east Rajasthan till Tuesday. Light or moderate rainfall along with thunderstorm and lightning are expected over the western Himalayan region and over some places in the plains during the next seven days, the weather department said.
The depression over northwest Rajasthan weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over the region on Wednesday. This weather system is likely to move slowly towards north-northwest and weaken into a low-pressure area during the next 12 hours, the Met department said.
Owing to the above weather conditions, the weather department has issued an orange alert in Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab for Wednesday and in Uttarakhand and east Uttar Pradesh till Thursday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours. The weather bureau advised farmers in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand to provide adequate drainage facilities for maize and transplanted rice and other kharif crops and vegetables.
The weather department also said there is a low to moderate risk of flash floods over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of east Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand till Thursday. Surface run-off or inundation is likely at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas in the states mentioned above, it added.
Moving to south Peninsular India, the weather department said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and coastal and interior Karnataka till Tuesday. Strong surface winds, with speeds of 40-50 kilometres per hour, are very likely over the region during the next five days, it added. The weather bureau also expects hot and humid weather conditions to prevail over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. End
