Reservoir levels up 96% YoY at 94.513 bcm as on Thu on very heavy rainfall

MUMBAI – Water level in key reservoirs across the country was up a whopping 96% at 94.513 billion cubic metres in the week ended Thursday due to very heavy rainfall across the country, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The water levels rose over 20% from the previous week's level of 78.381 billion cubic metres, the data showed.

 

The water level in the 161 key reservoirs as of Thursday was nearly 83% above the 10-year average for this period. The current water level is 51.8% of the total live storage capacity of 182.461 billion cubic metres.

 

Due to an early onset of the southwest monsoon, rainfall has been above-normal so far, which has helped replenish the reservoir levels. In the last week of June, the country received 64.3 millimetres of rainfall, 19?ove the normal of 53.9 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. The agency has forecast above normal rainfall across the country even in July.

 

All region across the country recorded higher water levels as of Thursday than that in the corresponding period last year. Rainfall was especially higher across central India. The region received 95?ove-normal rainfall at 20.5 millimetres on Jul. 8 and a whopping 145?ove normal at 24.1 millimetres on Jul. 7, according to data by IMD. As on Thursday, reservoirs in the central region held 22.328 billion cubic metres or 45.95% of the total live storage capacity of 28 reservoirs in the region, up from 26.96% a year ago. The region comprises Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 8.187 billion cubic metres, which is 41.24% of the total live storage capacity. This was higher than 30.62% held by the reservoirs in the same period a year ago. The northern region comprises Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

The water levels in reservoirs in the eastern region stood at 9.844 billion cubic metres, or 45.31% of the total live storage capacity, higher than 23.19% last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

In the western region, which comprises Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, water levels stood at 20.363 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. The water level was 54.51% of the total live storage capacity compared with 25.44% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 33.792 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level in 45 reservoirs of the region was 61.51% of the total live storage capacity. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was just 26.41% of the total live storage capacity, much lower than the current level.  End
