India's goods exports to US jump 24% YoY in June ahead of tariff deadline

NEW DELHI – India's merchandise exports to the US jumped in June as exporters rushed to beat President Donald Trump's Jul. 9 deadline for the implementation of reciprocal tariffs. According to commerce ministry data released Tuesday, Indian exports to the US increased 23.5% on year to $8.30 billion.
Exports to the US, however, fell compared with May, when India had shipped $8.83 billion worth of goods to the world's largest economy. During Apr-Jun, India exported goods worth $25.52 billion to the US, up 22.2% on year.
India's trade surplus with the US widened during Apr-Jun to $12.66 billion from $9.37 billion a year ago with imports from the US increasing 11.6% on year to $12.86 billion during the quarter. The government is not currently wary of risks to India's exports until the US implements reciprocal tariffs on New Delhi, Informist reported Tuesday, citing a government official.
The US will levy reciprocal tariffs on trading partners from on Aug. 1, after Trump postponed the Jul. 9 deadline. Trump has been sending letters to nations informing them about the reciprocal tariffs since last week, but has not yet sent a letter to India. India and the US are negotiating an interim trade deal before the Aug. 1 deadline.
Trump had, on Apr. 2, announced a 26% reciprocal tariff on India, but it is not clear whether the US will stick to it. The duty mentioned in the latest tariff letters sent to some countries so far is different from what was unveiled in April. End
