NEW DELHI - India's merchandise trade deficit narrowed to a four-month low of $18.78 billion in June even as exports fell to a seven-month low, according to commerce ministry data released Tuesday. The trade deficit was $21.88 billion in May and $20.84 billion in June 2024.


Merchandise exports fell 0.1% on year in June to $35.14 billion, but imports were down 3.7% on year at a four-month low of $53.92 billion. In May, India had exported goods worth $38.73 billion and imported goods worth $60.61 billion.

 

For Apr-Jun, the goods trade deficit was $67.27 billion compared with $62.10 billion a year ago. Merchandise exports rose 1.9% on year to $112.17 billion in the first quarter of the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), while imports rose 4.2% at $179.44 billion.

 

India's services exports last month grew 14.5% on year to $32.84 billion, according to provisional data by the commerce ministry. Services imports rose 16.1% on year to $17.58 billion in June. The services trade surplus widened to $15.26 billion in June from $13.53 billion a year ago. The Reserve Bank of India will further update services trade data by the end of July.

 

The rise in goods imports during Apr-Jun was driven by non-oil products, data showed. Non-oil imports rose 7.9% on year to $130.17 billion during Apr-Jun, while oil imports fell 4.4% on year to $49.26 billion.

 

Gold imports moderated to $7.49 billion during Apr-Jun against $8.35 billion a year ago. Electronic goods imports increased to $26.76 billion in the June quarter, up 22.2% on year. 

 

India's non-oil exports rose 6.0% on year to $94.77 billion in the June quarter, while petroleum product exports fell to $17.41 billion from $20.63 billion a year ago.

 

India exported engineering goods worth $28.90 billion in Apr-Jun, slightly higher than $27.89 billion a year ago. Electronic goods exports increased to $12.41 billion in the June quarter as against $8.43 billion in the same period last year. Gems and jewellery exports moderated to $6.66 billion in Apr-Jun from $7.26 billion a year ago.

 

China remained India's biggest import source nation in Apr-Jun, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Russia. India imported goods worth $29.74 billion from China in the June quarter, compared with $25.57 billion a year ago. Imports from the UAE increased to $16.80 billion in Apr-Jun from $13.05 billion in the same period last year, while imports from Russia eased to $16.77 billion from $18.38 billion in Apr-Jun 2024.

 

India's trade surplus with the US widened during Apr-Jun to $12.66 billion from $9.37 billion a year ago. India exported goods worth $25.52 billion to the US in Apr-Jun, up 22.2% on year, suggesting exporters rushed to ship goods ahead of the implementation of reciprocal tariffs by Washington. Imports from the US rose 11.6% on year to $12.86 billion in the June quarter.  End
