NEW DELHI/AHMEDABAD - Passenger vehicle despatches by automobile companies to dealerships continued to show a declining trend in June and in the June quarter, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Tuesday. The despatches were down 7.4% on year at 312,849 units in June and down 1.4% on year at 1.01 million units in the June quarter.
Wholesale sales of two-wheelers fell 3.4% on year to 1.56 million units in June and by a sharper 6.2% on year to 4.67 million units in the June quarter. Within the two-wheeler segment, sales of motorcycles contracted 3.7% on year to 992,627 units in June and those of scooters fell 1.7% on year to 533,875 units. In the quarter-ended June, motorcycle despatches contracted 9.2% on year to 2.90 million units. Scooters fared better as their wholesale sales remained largely unchanged on year at 1.66 million units in the quarter.
Despatches of three-wheelers rose 3.8% on year to 61,828 units in June. In the June quarter, their wholesale sales stood at 165,211 units, marginally higher than the year-ago quarter.
PASSENGER VEHICLES
Companies sold 85,091 passenger cars to dealerships in India in June, down a little over 15% on year. Given the plummeting demand for the sub-segment, companies produced 15.5?wer units in June, at 101,882 units. Their exports remained largely unchanged on year at 41,371 units in June. During the June quarter, domestic despatches of passenger cars fell 11% to 302,991 units, but exports grew nearly 3% to 103,768 units.
Domestic despatches of utility vehicles fell nearly 1% to 181,335 units in June, while exports remained stable at 34,051 units. Despite sales falling, production of utility vehicles rose 6% on year to 217,572 units last month. In the quarter ended June, companies sold 670,256 utility vehicles to Indian dealerships, up nearly 4% from last year. Exports grew at a staggering 26% on year to 97,999 units.
Production of passenger vehicles in the June quarter increased 3.4% to 1.24 million units. However, in June, production contracted nearly 2% to 328,605 units. Exports of passenger vehicles in June barely grew on year to 76,719 units but registered a 13% on-year growth in the June quarter to 204,330 units.
"Export growth in this segment was driven by stable demand across most markets, with strong performance in the Middle East (West Asia) and Latin America," SIAM said in a press release. A revival in Sri Lankan and Nepalese markets, coupled with rising demand from Japan and Australia contributed to the overall uptick, SIAM said.
TWO-WHEELERS
According to SIAM, overall despatches of the two-wheeler segment contracted in the June quarter due to inventory correction. "While the wholesale sales declined, 2W (two-wheeler) retail registration increased by 5% in Q1 (Apr-Jun) driven by marriage season and positive demand sentiments," SIAM said in a press release.
Two-wheelers, which form over 80% of overall automobile units sold in India, saw India wholesale sales contract on year but exports registered a growth of 34% on year to 387,762 units in June. Similarly, exports surpassed domestic sales in the June quarter. Exports grew 23% to 1.14 million units during the quarter. "This growth was driven by a revival in neighbouring markets and continued growth momentum across key export markets," SIAM said.
Motorcycles drove the growth of two-wheeler exports last month and last quarter. Motorcycle exports grew 37% on year to 342,892 units in June and 29% to 989,049 units in June quarter. While scooter exports fell over 7% in the June quarter to 144,647 units, they grew 11% on year to 43,586 units in June.
Companies held back production in June, as the output of two-wheelers grew only 1.4% on year to 1.94 million units. In the June quarter, companies made 5.9 million two-wheelers, about 42,000 units higher than last year.
THREE-WHEELERS AND COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
Domestic despatches of three-wheelers grew in mid-single digit year-on-year last month, while exports grew nearly 43% to 37,188 units. In the June quarter, their exports grew even faster, at 34% on year to 95,796 units. "Sustained performance of Three-Wheeler segment is driven by factors including increased economic activity supporting transportation creating urban demand," SIAM said. Retail registration of the cargo segment continues to grow, reflecting higher demand for intracity low-load cargo, the industry body said.
Companies manufactured 92,576 units of three-wheelers in June, nearly 9% higher on year. During the June quarter, output grew nearly 10% on year to 256,734 units.
Despatches of commercial vehicles in the June quarter contracted marginally on year to 223,215 units, while exports grew just over 23% on year to 19,427 units. Production of commercial vehicles grew 2.6% to 257,192 units during the quarter. While light commercial vehicles barely grew on year, medium-heavy variants contracted.
"Within the Commercial Vehicle segment, though the Passenger vehicle segment posted growth indicating continued momentum in public transportation, however, the Goods segment has shown a slight degrowth," SIAM said.
OUTLOOK
SIAM noted that the overall sentiment across various categories has remained subdued so far this financial year, as the industry continues to navigate supply side challenges. The industry body expects consumer sentiment to improve with the upcoming festival season, benefits of interest rate cuts, and an above-normal monsoon season which could aid rural income recovery.
SIAM said the industry outlook for the September quarter currently is "cautiously optimistic". "While the challenges from Q1 may continue to linger in the near term, several positive macroeconomic and seasonal indicators could support a gradual recovery," it said.
SIAM said supply side challenges, emanating especially from the recent export licensing requirement from China for imports of rare earth magnets into India, remains a concern for automakers across categories.
