India Tue rainfall 24% above normal, Jun 1-Jul 15 showers 10% above normal

MUMBAI – India received 11.9 millimetres of rain Tuesday, 24% above the normal of 9.6 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, two received below-normal rainfall while two recorded above-normal showers.
Northwest India received 14.1 millimetres of rainfall, which was 96% above normal, according to the data. Of the nine subdivisions in northwest India, rainfall over five Tuesday was categorised as "large excess". Rainfall in east and northeast India was also above normal by 49% at 21.2 millimetres. This was mainly due to extremely heavy rainfall over Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal. Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal recorded 256% and 342% above normal showers, respectively, Tuesday.
Showers over south peninsular India continued to remain deficient by 30% at 4.8 millimetres. Rainfall over six of the 10 subdivisions in south India was categorised as "large deficient" and "deficient". Central India received 12% below normal showers at 9.7 millimetres, the data showed.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall Tuesday was "large excess" in 10, "excess" in three, "normal" in five, "deficient" in 10, and "large deficient" in eight, data from the department showed. Since Jun. 1, the country has received 323.5 millimetres of rainfall, 10% above normal for the period, the data showed. End
