NEW DELHI – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is hopeful that global capability centres will play a key role in India's growth and bring in much-needed employment opportunities. Currently, the sector contributes $68 billion in direct gross value added. "That is around 1.6% of our GDP," she said at the Confederation of Indian Industry's GCC Business Summit. "By 2030, the gross value addition from GCCs could potentially range between $150 billion and $200 billion."

The finance minister further said, "The GCCs in India employ 2.61 million professionals. This number of 2.61 million is expected to go to 2.80 million by 2030."

Sitharaman assured the sector of support and said the government would bring in the framework necessary to enable its growth. "We have to see where the ground is and be more inviting for them (global capability centres) to come here (India)," she said.

She said that for India to become a hub for global capability centres, it is important to provide governance-related support to the sector. India also needs to bring the talent pool together to effectively use the advantage of global capability centres, she added.

The finance minister said the government has received suggestions on setting up a governing council for global capability centres. The governing council, NITI Aayog, and other departments will then have to sit together and deliberate on ways in which the Centre and the states can provide an enabling ecosystem, she said.

In the recent past, the government has intensified its focus on expanding global capability centres in India. In her Budget speech for the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), Sitharaman had announced the formulation of a national framework that will guide states in promoting global capability centres in tier II cities. "This will suggest measures for enhancing availability of talent and infrastructure, building-byelaw reforms, and mechanisms for collaboration with industry," she had said.  End
